The GIF format, a widely-used image format for animated images, does not support semi-transparency. This has caused issues for animated GIFs that combine existent GIFs with static PNGs having transparency. As of December 1, 2019, the problem has worsened with a new update that makes all white fills transparent. The update has frustrated designers relying on GIFs and affected existing animated GIFs.
